John E. vanSchagen, MD, associate professor, has been named the Interim Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. vanSchagen has been a senior associate chair in the Department since 2014.  He had previously served Clinical Service Chief of Family Medicine for Saint Mary’s from 2011-2019.  Dr. vanSchagen has practiced at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s and now serves as the Chief Academic Officer and DIO for Mercy Health West Michigan, which includes supervision of 14 residencies and fellowships as well as undergraduate medical education. Dr. vanSchagen is a College of Human Medicine alum having graduated in 1988.

When asked about his plans as Interim Chair he said, “I’ll be working with the Chair Search Committee to find the next permanent Chair and continuing the work that has started in our collaborative partnership with Henry Ford Health System.  We are currently in the process of recruiting and hiring additional clinicians to our Family Medicine Clinic, where there will also be ongoing work related to the compensation model and financial success.  I see my role as a transitional guide and mission-oriented leader for the Department in a period of change and growth.”
