Department of Family Medicine receives $1.38 million in HRSA grant awards - October 2008
Two Michigan State University College of Human Medicine - Department of Family Medicine faculty members, William Wadland, MD, MS, and Henry Barry, MD, MS, have been awarded federal grants from the Health Resource and Services Agency (HRSA) for a combined total of $1.38 million over three years.
New website offers information for pain sufferers - June 2008
Karen Ogle, MD, is a Michigan State University Dept of Family Medicine physician whose professional mission is to relieve pain. So much so that she is one of the driving forces behind a new website developed to help people suffering from cancer pain and those who support them. Located at www.mipain.org, the site offers information and resources for those suffering from pain, their health care providers and policymakers. While it does not provide individualized health care advice, it equips patients and families to ask the right questions and advocate for relief of their pain more effectively.
Gregory S. Holzman, MD, MPH, presented with Michigan State Medical Society Presidential Citation - June 2008
Gregory S. Holzman, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Executive at the Michigan Department of Community Health, was presented with a Presidential Citation during the 143rd annual meeting of the Michigan State Medical Society House of Delegates May 2 in Dearborn. Dr. Holzman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine.
James Hubbard, MD, selected as Michigan’s 2008 Family Physician of the Year- June 2008
James Hubbard, MD, of Grand View Health System in Ironwood has been selected as Michigan’s 2008 Family Physician of the Year. The award is presented annually based on nominations by Michigan Academy of Family Physicians members, component chapters and county medical societies. The award is presented to a physician who exemplifies the tradition of family physicians and their contribution to the health of Michigan’s citizens.

Dr. Fumio Shaku Participates in Visiting Scholar Program - April 2008
Dr. Fumio Shaku is a scholar in the Methods of Family Medicine Education Training Program, and has an appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Shaku will be in the program from April 2008 to March 2009.

Marolee Neuberger, MS, named director
of MSU Family Medicine Residency Program Network - October 2007
Marolee Neuberger, MS, has been named director of the MSU Family Medicine Residency Program Network for the Department of Family Medicine. As director, she will provide a leadership role for the Network, focusing on collaborative work with the nine program directors, faculty, and staff. Together, they will identify pertinent goals and action steps which will improve graduate medical education in Michigan. Her duties include coordination of meetings, retreats, educational workshops, faculty exchanges and other networking opportunities across the residency programs and department. She will also develop educational and promotional materials and assist in curriculum development as needed in collaboration with program and department. The Family Medicine Residency Network is a collaborative of nine family medicine residency programs affiliated with MSU which includes over 200 residents and 100 faculty members.
Dr. Chisato Tamaki Participates in Visiting Scholar Program - October 2007
Dr. Chisato Tamaki joined the Department of Family Medicine with an appointment of Visiting Assistant Professor as a scholar in the Methods in Family Medicine Training Program from October 2007 to March 2008.
'Top 10 Awards' Honor Medical Schools for Support of Family Medicine - April 2007
The MSU College of Human Medicine, one of the 10 medical schools that have contributed the most to the pipeline of family physicians, was honored when the American Association of Family Physicians (AAFP) presented its Top Ten Awards during the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Conference on April 27. The awards recognize schools that, during a three-year period, graduate the greatest percentage of students who choose family medicine.
MSU Department of Family Medicine Clinic Receives 2006 Governor’s Award of Excellence - April 2007
Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Department of Family Medicine Clinic has received the prestigious 2006 Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Ambulatory Care Setting. The Governor presents this award in partnership with MPRO, Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization (QIO). The award acknowledges excellence in health care quality and safety.

On January 1, 2007, Mary Noel, PhD, MPH, RD, assumed the position of Senior Associate Chair in the Department of Family Medicine of Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine (CHM). Dr. Noel, accepted the appointment after serving 10 years as the department's Associate Chair for Academic Affairs.

WinklerPrins follows Mary Noel, PhD, RD, who held the Associate Chair position for 10 years, including one as Acting Associate Chair.

A Michigan State University study finds that not enough doctors are receiving formal training in end-of-life care, something that could result in more patients receiving treatments that are not only painful or uncomfortable but also ineffective at prolonging life.

named to F. Marian Bishop Fellowship - July 20, 2005
William C. Wadland, MD, MS, has been selected as a Fellow by The F. Marian Bishop Charitable Trust Leadership Program effective July 2005. This one-year fellowship program identifies and develops qualified senior family medicine faculty to successfully assume positions of greater responsibility in academic medicine. Dr. Wadland is Chair of the Michigan State University (MSU) Department of Family Practice and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development in the MSU College of Human Medicine.
Andrew Hunt, founding dean of MSU’s College of Human Medicine, dies - June 21, 2005
Andrew Hunt, founding dean of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (CHM), died Thursday, June 16, in Georgia. He was 89. Hunt’s MSU career began in 1964 when he was appointed dean of the newly founded College of Human Medicine. He held that post until 1977.
Medical Decision Support Tools: The Family Physician’s New Stethoscope - Spring 2005 (pdf file)
At MSU’s Department of Family Practice, tools are being developed, piloted, and used that put the best and most valid answers to such questions literally in a physician’s pocket for use in real time — 60 seconds or less — at the point of patient care. Called medical decision support tools, these resources can be “mined” for information on hand-held devices otherwise known as PDAs (personal digital assistants). Visiting Scholar Dr. Nobuaki Matsuo Provides Tsunami Relief in Thailand
When Nobuaki Matsuo, MD, learned that a massive tsunami had ravaged south Asia on December 26, 2004, his first desire was to join in the emergency medical relief effort. Although he is a visiting scholar with the MSU Department of Family Practice living in East Lansing, he immediately made the 14-hour plane trip back to Japan to join a medical relief team that was headed for Thailand.
