September 23, 2009, at 7:00 pm in the MSU Radiology Auditorium, the MSU College of Human Medicine (CHM) chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the MSU CHM Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG), and the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) hosted a roundtable discussion on the topic of healthcare reform and the impact on physicians. Panelists included: MI Senator Tom George (R); MI Representative Marc Corriveau (D); Leonard Fleck, PhD, MSU Professor of Philosophy and Medical Ethics; David Walsworth, MD, MAFP President; Gregory Holzman, MD, Chief Medical Executive of the Michigan Department of Community Health; Carol Monson, DO, former Michigan Osteopathic Association President; and Paul Arshagouni, JD, MD, MSU Professor of Health Law.  The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Marsha Rappley, MD, Dean of the MSU College of Human Medicine. May 21, 2009, Family Medicine Research Day XXXII, was at Genoa Woods Conference Center, Brighton, Michigan with the theme of Promoting Research Works in Progress. Investigators with research concepts made a five-minute presentation to the expert panel. The panel discussed the idea with the investigator and audience for fifteen minutes. The goal was to help the investigator move the concept into a fundable study and help others understand how experts examine a study concept.

Karen Ogle, MD, retires after 28 years of service. - October 2009

Dr. Karen Ogle retired at the end of October from her position as full professor with the College of Human Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine. A reception in her honor was held October 29, 2009, at the Michigan State University (MSU) Kellogg Center Riverside Room.

Applications now being accepted for Blake W.H. Smith Memorial Primary Health Care Endowment Scholarship - October 2009

The Blake W.H. Smith Scholarship provides a stipend of at least $1,000.00 for a CHM student, resident, or faculty member (academic/clinical/volunteer) engaged in furthering the goals of primary health care, or community-oriented medical education with an emphasis on international settings or under-served areas and populations in the United States. Preference will be given to individuals who are not doing a project in their home country.

Karen Ogle, MDMSU College of Human Medicine Research Newsletter: While end of life care is something most people find difficult to think about, it’s the one thing Dr. Karen Ogle is dedicated to as a teacher, researcher and mentor. It is through her tireless compassion, nurturing and clinical understanding that many undergraduate and medical students have come to understand the importance of end of life and palliative care – areas that are often difficult for clinicians fully focused on their responsibilities in curing and extending life. In this role, she has helped many of these students go beyond general understanding by providing hands-on research opportunities to scientifically assess end of life care, and as a result, improve the quality of life for those dying.

Howard Brody, MD PhD, receives Lifetime Achievement Award from American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (external link) - June 2009

Howard Brody, MD PhDThe ASBH Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding contributions and significant publications that have helped shape the direction of the fields of bioethics and the medical humanities. Howard Brody received his MD degree from the College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University in 1976, and his PhD in Philosophy, also from Michigan State University, in 1977.  After completing his residency in family practice at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, he returned to Michigan State University, where he served as University Distinguished Professor of Family Practice, Philosophy, and the Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences. He was Director of the Center for Ethics and Humanities from 1985 to 2000. In 2006, Dr. Brody moved to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, to become the Director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities and John P. McGovern Centennial Chair in Family Medicine.

David Walsworth, MDDavid Walsworth, MD, re-elected as delegate to American Medical Association - June 2009

Dr. David Walsworth, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, has been re-elected to the Michigan State Medical Society delegation to the American Medical Association. Walsworth will serve another two-year term as an alternate delegate on the 21-member Michigan delegation to the American Medical Association's House of Delegates.

Doctors Wadland and Short receive CHM faculty awards - May 2009

Dean Marsha Rappley, MD, announced the recipients of the 2008-2009 College of Human Medicine (CHM) Faculty and Academic Staff Awards at a reception in the MSU Life Sciences Building, May 13, 2009. Two from the Department of Family Medicine were recognized for their outstanding academic contributions and achievements: CHM Distinguished Faculty Award - William C. Wadland, MD, MS, and CHM Outstanding Community Faculty Award - William Short, MD.

Kay Backus retires from MSU Family Medicine, reception planned - May 2009

Kay BackusKay Backus, special projects coordinator, will retire from the Department of Family Medicine at the end of May after 35 years with MSU/CHM. A Retirement Reception is being planned for Friday, May 29, from 4:30-6:30 pm at the MSU Kellogg Center, Corniche Room. David M. Luoma, MD, MMM, CPE, receives Hometown Health Hero award - May 2009

David M. Luoma, MD, MMM, CPE, was recognized as one of 12 "Hometown Health Heroes" who have worked collaboratively to make their community a healthier place to live and grow by the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) during Michigan Public Health Week April 19-27, 2009.

J. William Rawlin, DO, named Munson Residency Program Director - May 2009

J. William Rawlin, DO, has been named Director of the Munson Family Practice Residency Program. This rurally-based program, located in Traverse City, Michigan, is structured to train physicians for rural and small town practice. Ambulatory, hospital, and community based training are utilized throughout the residency.

Marquette Residency Program Coordinator helps develop professional certification program - April 2009

Susan Tincknell, Coordinator of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program, participated in the National Board of Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education Programs (TAGME) Task Force to create a Family Medicine Certification Assessment. She was responsible for writing questions for the Monitored Assessment Test, piloted the exam, and created the Family Medicine Acronym Guide. The first exam was conducted in March 2009, and the next opportunity for certification will be in September 2009.

Roy Gerard, MD, inducted into Sparrow’s 2009 Physician’s Hall of Fame

Roy Gerard, MD, was chosen for the 2009 Physician’s Hall of Fame at Sparrow Health System. The award recognizes distinguished physicians for their contribution to Sparrow Health System and the community, and a celebration dinner for those honored was held in late April 2009.

Debbie Richardson featured in CHM Research Newsletter - March 2009

Debbie Richardson has enjoyed an evolving role in research administration within the MSU Department of Family Medicine. She balances her time among pre- and post-grant management, helping faculty meet grant requirements and submission deadlines, and keeping track of the department’s scholarly activities. MSU Faculty to Present on Smoking Research in Ireland - March 2009

Three faculty members from the Department of Family Medicine (Jodi Summers Holtrop, PhD, CHES; Carlos Ríos-Bedoya, ScD; and William C.
