2024 Family Medicine Residency Network Annual Retreat

Starting with the End in Mind: Redesigning Resident Assessment for a Competency-Based Framework

Friday, September 13, 2024

Shanty Creek Resort, The Lodge at Cedar River Village, 2400 Troon S, Bellaire, MI 49615

Program Summary – The nationwide implementation of a competency-based medical education (CBME) framework in graduate medical education is resulting in many changes across residency programs. Changes include redesigning existing resident assessment processes and tools so that programs have the data they need to determine resident progress toward meeting the required core outcomes developed by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Our retreat will provide participants with a chance to hear from national experts involved in the implementation of CBME in Family Medicine residency programs while also having dedicated time to work with their peers to revise their assessment processes and tools. Retreat objectives:

  • Describe the ABFM core outcomes for which residents are expected to achieve competency and must be evaluated by program faculty.
  • Share best practices for evaluating residents under a competency based medical education framework.
  • Identify resources available to support the adaptation of program assessment tools and processes
