Dr. Omayma Alshaarawy is a tenured Associate Professor in the DFM. Her work is largely supported by over $5 million in federal and state grants, including major NIH awards (R01, K99/R00).
A cornerstone of her current research is the Cannabis Legalization in Michigan and Cardiovascular Health (CALM-CVD) Study, an R01-funded project examining the impact of cannabis use on heart health among patients with hypertension. This vital research aims to provide much-needed clinical evidence on cardiovascular outcomes in the context of changing cannabis policies.
Beyond this flagship study, Dr. Alshaarawy’s portfolio investigates the effects of prenatal cannabis use, diabetes management, and health disparities. She is also a committed educator and mentor, recognized for creating an inclusive training environment where her students and mentees thrive, one of whom received MSU’s first NIH R36 dissertation award. Her impactful work continues to bridge epidemiology, clinical practice, and public health.
