The MSU-PCRC has been moving full steam ahead supporting research projects in residency programs and facilitating the Research Training Fellowship Program (RTFP).
Two PCRC-supported research projects led by residency program faculty and residents will be presented at upcoming Family Medicine Research Day on May 21st :
- A Comparative Analysis of Obstetrical Outcomes in a Maternity Desert Versus an Urban Area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan led by Meredith Buck, MD and recent CHM graduate, Madiline McNamara, MD (UP Health System- Marquette)
- Review of Local Analgesic Methods for Intra-articular Knee Injections led by Nick Hallenbeck, DO (U of M Health-Sparrow) and Ori Drory, MD (MSU/MyMichigan Health Alma).
The ABFM-Funded Research Training Fellowship Program (RTFP), which launched in Fall 2025, is currently in month 9 of its 15-month long time span. The program is a faculty development initiative to promote research training and mentorship development. The 6 Faculty Fellows are preparing to present their research projects at upcoming Family Medicine Research Day:
- “My Health My Choice: Improving Contraceptive Decision Support for Individuals with Chronic Conditions in Rural Northern Michigan” by Kate Shaffer, MD, CLC, FAAFP (Munson Health - Traverse City)
- “Parental Leave Policies and Practices in Family Medicine Residencies” by Katrina Weirauch-Engle, DO (U of M Health Sparrow - Lansing)
- “Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Expectations and Antibiotics by Age” by Uzma Khan, MD (McLaren Health – Flint) and Jenna Bernson, MD (MyMichigan Alma)
- “Community-Engaged Medical Education: Impact of the Leadership in Medicine for the Underserved Program” by Gurbaksh Esch, MD, MPH, FAAP (Hurley Medical Center- Flint)
- “Treatment Intent and Prognostic Understanding for End-of-Life Care Preferences (TIP-UP) in a Rural Cancer Center: The Role of Family Medicine” by Raquel Clary-Lantis, DO (UP Health System- Marquette)
Faculty Awards:
Yasi Zamani-Hank, PhD, MPH and the MSU-PCRC Team Receive the Blue Ribbon (“Top 25”) Poster Award at STFM 2026 for their poster presentation, “The Research Training Fellowship Program: An Educational Initiative of the MSU Primary Care Research Collaborative” co-authored with Julie Phillips, MD, MPH, HALM; Diana Haggerty, PhD; Mark Ebell, MD, MS; Henry Barry, MD, MS; Jenna Bernson, MD; and Katrina Weirauch, DO.
The Award recognizes the top 25 highest-scoring peer-reviewed posters based on 8 criteria including relevance to Family Medicine education, innovativeness, and high impact. The team’s poster was ranked #5 of 350 posters.
