Systematic Underinclusion of People of Color in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Research: The Need for Community-Engaged Approaches

People of color are significantly underincluded in psychedelic-assisted therapy research. Research suggests that they are highly motivated and interested to participate in this research; therefore, their underinclusion is not likely to be explained by a lack of interest in research participation. Instead, it is possible that they are systematically underincluded because our research methods and approaches (e.g., community-engaged research) are not geared toward ensuring their inclusion .

Our systematic review found that, indeed, psychedelic-assisted therapy research does not use community-engaged research or other approaches known to support the inclusion of people of color in research.

Thus, we conclude that psychedelic therapy research should consider incorporating community-engaged approaches if our field is to enhance the racial diversity of our sample participants–thereby enhancing the applicability of psychedelic research for all groups.
