Deana Wilbanks, Ed.D. is the Director for Medical Student Career Advising in the Office of Student Affairs and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. She a licensed professional counselor in higher education who enjoys teaching and providing career advising to medical students across all four years of medical school.

Dr. Wilbanks has been with the College of Human Medicine for 17 years and previously served as the Coordinator of Career Education and Counseling. Her favorite part of her job is spending time with the students,  helping them explore various career paths in medicine, and assisting them in preparing for the residency application and match. Dr. Wilbanks recruits and trains physician faculty to provide career advising support to medical students. She also engages in scholarly activity examining how medical students make specialty choice decisions resulting in multiple presentations and publications.

Dr. Wilbanks earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology (1999) and Master of Science in Counseling (2001) degrees from the University of North Georgia.  She graduated from Michigan State University with a Doctorate of Education in Administration and Leadership in 2020.  Previously, Dr. Wilbanks supervised graduate students earning their degrees in counseling and psychology while completing their clinical internships at a non-profit organization in Georgia.  She has always had a passion to work with students in higher education.
