Allies are an important part of promoting equitable spaces in academic medicine. This commentary offers two possibilities for helping allies promote larger organizational change. First, thinking with critical organizational lenses will support allies in considering the intersections of gender and race and ways these create disparities in organizational policies and cultures. Second, considering longitudinal qualitative research approaches aids allies in understanding the non-linear relationships between past, present, and future experience of disparities. Layering and combining more critical perspectives in theory and research methods will help advance large systemic change and give allies specific insights to effect these changes.
