Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Department of Family Medicine

Steve Roskos, MD, Associate Chairperson for Academic Affairs

Our Academic Mission has continued to advance in 2018. As always, our colleagues around the state are engaged at all levels of teaching – medical students, residents, fellows, and continuing education. Members of the department have been developing educational innovations and presenting their scholarly work at meetings such as the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Conference on Medical Student Education, the STFM Annual Spring Conference, and the Family Centered Maternity Care Conference.

The “Shared Discovery Curriculum” is now in its third year. Robin DeMuth, MD continues to serve as Assistant Dean for Clinical Experiences and Margaret Thompson, MD has serves as Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to shepherd the legacy curriculum through its final year. Several Family Medicine Faculty serve as Learning Society Fellows, assisting a small group of medical students as they learn their basic and clinical sciences through the first two years of medical school. Harland Holman, MD directs a newly formatted Family Medicine “Subinternship” (replacing the legacy “clerkship”) which places students in outpatient offices for four weeks. Students also complete a required Primary Care Selective, most of which occur in family medicine or family medicine subspecialty (geriatrics or sports medicine) offices.

The Integrated Medical School and Family Medicine Residency Program (TIP) program continues to grow, offering an opportunity for students interested in family medicine to explore the specialty in depth during their fourth year and receive financial support. This year seven fourth year students are participating in TIP. Andrea Wendling, MD continues to direct the Rural Health Curriculum, preparing MSU CHM graduates to provide care to underserved rural populations.

In 2018, 29 graduates of CHM chose to pursue Family Medicine Residency Training, 11% of the class. We could not do what we do without the incredible effort of all the Family Medicine faculty in our campuses, affiliated residencies, and in the community, as well as our busy and talented administrative support staff. Together what we are doing is improving the health of Michigan’s communities.
