The Department of Family Medicine of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine is delighted to announce our new Chair, Dr. Julie Phillips.
Dr. Phillips is a professor of Family Medicine, practicing family physician, well-loved teacher of residents and students, and internationally respected scholar. She received her medical degree and a Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan and completed her residency training in Family Medicine at the same institution.
Before accepting the Chair role, Dr. Phillips served the College as the Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development, where she was known as a caring and effective student advocate; and as a core faculty member for the Sparrow-MSU Family Medicine Residency Program.
Dr. Phillips’ primary research focus is development of the primary care physician workforce. She is an international expert on how medical students make career choices, and her research has changed the national conversation about the impact of medical student debt. She has more than eighty peer-reviewed publications and has received many awards for her work.
As Department Chair, she will continue to practice full-spectrum family medicine, including outpatient, inpatient, and maternity care, and teach residents and students in all clinical settings.
Dr. Phillips will bring her considerable expertise and experience to role as the leader of the Department of Family Medicine, to the benefit of the department, the College, our learners, and our communities.
